The City
Home to more than 140,000 people, Eugene is Oregons second largest city. Springfield, Eugenes sister city, is located immediately to the east and the two cities are often referred to as Eugene-Springfield. Eugene covers approximately 42 square miles, with the Willamette River running through the heart of the city. The McKenzie River, source of Eugenes excellent drinking water supply, joins the Willamette north of town. The elevation is 425 above sea level with Skinners Butte to the north, Hendricks Park to the east, and Spencers Butte to the south. There are numerous parks, with Alton Baker Park, next to the Willamette River the largest. Eugene is less than two hours from skiing in the Cascades to the east and one hour from the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Eugenes moderate climate, with an average daytime high of 63 and a night time low of 41 is one of the Eugene's attractive features. Mild winters, a long growing season and few drastic weather changes are characteristic. Normal rainfall is 49, but there is very little ice or snow.
